Build Our Kids is a local Douglas County initiative with the goal of building healthy communities. The goal is to provide a framework that will shift thinking from fixing young people’s problems to promoting young people’s strengths. Research from the Search Institute® has proven that the more assets a child has, the more likely he or she is to succeed later in life. Strong relationships between adults and young people, and youth and their peers are essential to building 40 Developmental Assets. Promoting assets with youth can be as simple as remembering to tell a youth when he does something well.

Adults in Douglas County can grow youth’s strengths by developing relationships that assist youth in becoming valuable contributors. Douglas County can be a healthy community where children thrive. Presently, it includes an active partnership between Roseburg Rotary, the Commission on Children and Families, Phoenix School, Winston Area Community Partnership, the community of Riddle, and other partners. New employers will want to locate here because their employees see Douglas County as a desirable place to live.

The ultimate result of the Build Our Kids Coalition is a community intentionally working together to support and guide youth to a healthy productive life.

Our vision is of a healthier, safer and vital community because we have paid attention to what our kids truly need: positive attention from all aspects of the community.
